MANILA, Philippines—Like the women, the Philippine men's beach volleyball team took home bronze in the 30th Southeast Asian Games at the Subic Tennis Court on Friday.
The Filipinos needed to beat Singapore in a golden match to secure a podium finish in the event.
The tandem of James Buytrago and Jaron Requinton faltered against Singapore's Kingsley Tay and Yang Shen in the first match 22-20, 20-22, 7-15.
But a 21-14, 21-14 sweep by Jude Garcia and Edmar Bonono against Nicholas Kiu and Trevis Tan kept alive their medal hopes, as they forced a golden match for the bronze.
It was up to Garcia and Bonono to seal the deal for the Philippines, and they responded with a 25-23, 21-13 victory over Tan and Shen.
"Sobrang gigil kami na makakuha ng medal, lalo na at home court natin," Requinton said. "So chance na talaga natin makakuha ng medal, kaya 'yun ang motivation namin."
Garcia was superb, firing the strong hit that ended the match.
"Mindset ko talaga, gusto ko manalo. Wala akong inisip na iba, gusto kong tulungan ang teammates ko at para sa Pilipinas," he said.
Indonesia, meanwhile, swept Thailand in the gold-medal tie to top the podium.
