MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine Blu Girls breezed past Malaysia at The Villages in Mabalacat city, Pampanga on Friday to reach the Southeast Asian Games softball final
The local side, which downed Malaysia 12-0 and extended a winning streak that dates back to 2001 SEA Games, plays the winner between Indonesia and Singapore for the gold medal.
"It's in the bag no matter who we are facing," said Jun Veloso, top official representing the Amateur Softball Association Philippines, the sport's national governing body.
It wasn't as rosy for the Blu Boys, however, as they absorbed a shock 4-3 loss to Singapore in the semifinals.
Singapore had already stunned the Philippines earlier this year at the world championship, but the Blu Boys got back at their regional rivals with an 8-0 win on Wednesday to end the elimination round.
On Friday, Singapore scored a two-run homer with two outs in the third inning for a 4-1 lead the visitors never relinquished.
The Blu Boys still have a chance at gold through the Page system.
The format allows them to face the winner between Nos. 3 and 4 teams Indonesia and Thailand for the chance to challenge Singapore in the final.
