(UPDATED) The Philippine national football team bid its title hopes goodbye after bowing to Vietnam, 2-1, in the second leg of their AFF Suzuki Cup semifinal at the My Dinh National Stadium Thursday night.
After holding the host team scoreless in first half, the Philippine Azkals conceded 2 goals.
The Azkals entered Thursday's match down 2-1 on aggregate following their loss to Vietnam at home.
They needed to score at least 2 goals against the Vietnamese squad.
But Nguyen Quang Hai scored a goal in the 83rd minute, followed by another strike by Nguyen Cong Phuong 3 minutes later.
In the 89th minute, James Younghusband pulled off one for the Philippine side to cut Vietnam's lead to 2-1.
But the Vietnam side made sure the visitors would have to bleed to get a chance to the goal, conceding to just one goal by the Filipinos.
Prior the loss, the Azkals were looking to duplicate the “Miracle of Hanoi” wherein they beat Vietnam 2-0 in 2010.
Vietnam advanced to the final round 4-2 on aggregate. The Vietnamese will take on Malaysia which beat Thailand in the other semifinal pairing.
