MANILA—The Mobile Legends and Starcraft teams were victorious, but the Hearthstone players were sent packing in the group qualifier, a satisfactory start for the Philippines in the Southeast Asian Games esports tournament at FilOil Flying V on Thursday.
Sibol’s Mobile Legends: Bang Bang drew Indonesia 1-1, beat Laos 2-0 and leveled Thailand 1-1 in the preliminaries, eliminating Laos and Thailand in the process.
Experimenting on a new lineup proved costly to the Filipinos in their first loss to the Thais, team captain Kyle “Pheww” Arcangel said.
“May lineup kasi kaming pina-practice tapos successful naman, tinry namin gamitin hindi siya nagwork. Na-snowball kami. Nauna ’yung kalaban,” Arcangel said.
The draw put Arcangel’s team in the lower bracket qualifiers, while a sweep would’ve placed the local side in the upper-bracket rounds.
Sibol’s Starcraft II squad secured a playoff berth after Caviar “Enderr” Acampado dominated Group B of the Starcraft II qualifiers, getting wins against Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand.
Teammate Justin “Nuks” Santos, meanwhile, finished the day with a 2-3 record.
Jacinta “Jia” Dee and Dustin “Waningmoon” Mangulabnan, however, were eliminated in Hearthstone.
