MANILA - For sixth time in seven years, the National University Pep Squad flexed its muscles in the UAAP cheerdance competition, showcasing yet more death-defying stunts en route to another dominating performance.
Head coach Ghicka Bernabe said the team's winning tradition all boiled down to proper support.
"Our formula is management support, hindi kami pinabayaan. We always feel that we are VIPs kasi yung support at pangangailangan ng mga bata laging nandyan," Bernabe told reporters.
She also credited her coaching staff for their skill and creativity.
"To be honest I’m just so blessed na yung mga kasama ko they are not just coaches but they are my friends. I know them very well since college so alam ko sila kung paano magtrabaho," she said.
Bernabe praised her wards for keeping the passion in the group aside from topnotch gymnastic skills.
The multi-titled coach said it was not an easy championship run, as they had to train hard for the yearly competition. They just kept on reminding themselves that it is sweeter to go home with a gold medal.
"Ang sinabi ko lang sa kanila, ‘Kailangang maging worth it yung lahat ng mga araw na na-miss nyo (being) with your families.’ Kasi mas masarap umuwi na champion ka," Bernabe said.
The head coach of NU also bared that their goal is to beat last year's champions, even if they themselves are the reigning champions.
"Tinatalo namin kung sino ang nag-champion last year. Alam namin na wala kaming ibang makakalaban," told Bernabe, who said this season was one of her favorites.
The NU coach also said she knows what her team is capable of and where to improve on.
