Wittingly or otherwise, Naoya ‘The Monster” Inoue of Japan might have given Filipino challenger Nonito Donaire. Jr. an idea on how to negate the supposed menacing punching power of the Japanese superstar.
Back in 2015, Donaire was a tourist in Japan and had an opportunity to watch an already peaking Inoue in a sparring session against four Filipino boxers.
One of those boxers, Malcolm Tunacao revealed that Inoue dropped the first three Filipino boxers except him as the Cebuano former world champion used his ring generalship to avoid Inoue’s power.
“Nanood noon si Junjun (Nonito’s nickname) at nakita niya yung galaw ni Inoue kasi malapit na title defense noon ni Inoue. Siguro napag-aralan din ni Donaire kung paano maiwasan yung atake ni Inoue,” said Tunacao who is a former WBC world flyweight titleholder.
Tunacao believes fighting on the medium and long distance may help Donaire increase his chances against Inoue, the same thing the Filipino did against another knockout artist Vic Darchinyan 12 years ago in Connecticut.
A heavy underdog, Donaire used his greater reach in outfoxing and eventually knocking out Darchinyan, giving the Filipino-American multi-division champion his first world crown, the IBF flyweight title via 5th round TKO held July 7, 2007.
“Kung gamitan lang ni Junjun ng jab, malaki tsansa niya kasi sa experience ni Junjun talagang nagawa naman niya yun,” said Tunacao “
Donaire’s father Nonito, Sr. meanwhile sees his son gaining most of that performance come fight night against Inoue later tonight.
Nonito, Sr, who will assist lead trainer Kenny Adams in their fight against Inoue, was Donaire’s trainer in that victory over Darchinyan.
“Mga 80% ng laro ni Junjun kay Darchinyan tingin ko yun ang maibabalik namin at yun din naman kailangan namin,” said Nonito Sr.
Donaire, who will turn 37 on November 16, will stake his WBA bantamweight crown in a unification match against Inoue, the IBF ruler, in a 12-round title bout later tonight at the Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.
The 26-year-old Inoue is parading a fearsome record of 18-0, 16 via knockout while Donaire is already a veteran of 45 fights and has tallied a 40-5 record, 26 via the short route.
