UAAP 82: NU sweeps through men’s, women’s taekwondo titles

National University maintained its supremacy in UAAP taekwondo by retaining the men's and women's championships.

The Bulldogs completed a 6-0 sweep in Season 82 men's competition by beating University of Santo Tomas, 6-1, and University of the Philippines, 7-0, en route to a third consecutive title.

NU's women also won all 6 of their matches, capping that run with a 5-2 win over UST and a 4-3 victory over UP.

Featherweight Sturdy Jay Gilbuena, a 19-year old former Asian juniors campaigner from Nasipit town, Agusan del Norte, was named rookie-MVP in the men's division.

La Salle's men's squad finished a strong second with a 5-1 card. The Green Jins, whose lone loss came from the Bulldogs, overpowered Ateneo and Far Eastern University on the final day.

In her final year with NU, Lady Bulldog bantamweight Baby Jessica Cabanal, a 2015 Rookie of the Year from Bicol, emerged as the season MVP.

The Lady Tiger Jins finished second with a 5-1 mark, while the Lady Maroons reached the podium after going 4-2 in the three-day meet.
