MANILA, Philippines--Back-to-back champion National University posted contrasting wins to gain a share of the top spot after Day 1 of UAAP Season 82 men's taekwondo at the Blue Eagle Gym on Tuesday.

Joining NU at the top of the standings was University of the East.

National-team mainstay Keno Mendoza turned things around against La Salle's Mark Gacilos to give the Bulldogs their second win of the day at 4-3.

Mendoza emerged from a 13-all count to edge Gacilos, 22-21, for his team's second straight victory.

NU earlier swept Ateneo, 7-0.

UE, on the other hand, blanked University of the Philippines 7-0, before dominating Ateneo, 5-2, to keep in step with NU.

Leading the charge for the Red Warriors was flyweight Lawrence Borres who conceded 10 points in his two matches while scoring 46.

La Salle and University of Santo Tomas ended up with identical 1-1 records for a tie at third and fourth places. The Green Jins opened their season with a 4-3 decision over the Tiger Jins, but the Thomasians routed UP 5-2 for the bounce-back win.

The other result saw Ateneo take its first win in three matches, 4-3 against FEU.
