Brandon Vera failed in his bid to become a 2-division champion after he suffered his first defeat in ONE Championship on Sunday night in ONE: Century Part II at Ryogoku Kokugikan, Japan.
The Filipino-American fighter failed to sustain his attack against Aung La N Sang of Myanmar when the reigning ONE light heavyweight champion stopped him in the second round of their 5-round bout.
Vera, the ONE heavyweight champion, went down to the light heavyweight division to challenge N Sang, but the cut in weight apparently affected his timing and conditioning.
This made him look vulnerable especially when the Myanmarese champion started unloading heavy shots.
But Vera was able to pop big shots of his own, and was even able to cut N Sang in the forehead using his elbow.
But the move came too late as the Filipino-American got dropped with one of N Sang's shots.
N Sang then fired punch after punch until the referee had to step in and award the stoppage win to the reigning light heavyweight champion in the second round.
With the victory, N Sang remained as the ONE light heavyweight and ONE middleweight champion.
Vera's defeat capped an awful night for the Filipino fighters in ONE: Century.
Team Lakay fighters Kevin Belingon, Honorio Banario and Danny Kingad all lost in their respective matches.
Only Lito Adiwang was able to produce a victory for the Philippines by stopping his Japanese foe Senzo Ikeda.
