MANILA, Philippines -- Ateneo star Thirdy Ravena was downcast even after tallying a season-best 23 points in the Blue Eagles' hard-earned 80-74 triumph over Adamson University on Wednesday afternoon.
Ravena shot 9 of 16 from the field, had 5 assists and 4 rebounds, and helped Ateneo improve to 9-0 in UAAP Season 82. But he was far from thrilled with how he performed, instead dwelling on the mistakes he made down the stretch that helped Adamson stay in the game.
One particular error gnawed at Ravena, as he left Adamson's Jerrick Ahanmisi open for a 3-pointer with 22 seconds to play that cut the deficit to four points, 75-71. He was immediately fouled in the next play, but after making two free throws, Ravena was yanked from the game.
"Honestly 'yung play noong huli kay Ahanmisi, 'yung bumuhay sa kanila, 'yung three-points, it was actually my bad," Ravena said.
"Coach Tab (Baldwin) communicated that to us, the exact same play kung ano 'yung gagawin namin," he explained. "Yet hindi ko sinunod 'yung play, inisip ko na papasa niya kay (Lenda) Douanga sa baseline, so nag-help ako, which left Jerrick open, tapos nagka-3 points sila."
Ravena lamented how his decision gave Adamson a sliver of hope, and admitted to feeling as though he let his team down with his poor decision-making.
"It's my bad," he stressed.
For Ravena, who received a stern talking to from Baldwin after his mistake, this game showed that he still has plenty to work on, regardless of what the statistics might say.
"Ito 'yung isa sa mga games na panalo pero 'yung feeling mo na parang talo ka pa rin," he said.
"It doesn't matter kung ano 'yung scoring performance ko kung hindi maganda 'yung laro ng team. Kumbaga, parang panget pa rin overall. Para sa akin, there's a lot to improve on, and we can still be greater as a team."
Ravena also gave plenty of credit to Adamson, acknowledging that his team was "outworked" by the Soaring Falcons.
"Na-swertehan lang namin sa huli na nagka-streak kami," he said.
The Blue Eagles will gun for their 10th win in a row -- and a spot in the final 4 -- on Sunday against archrival La Salle.
