Far Eastern University booked a men’s championship ticket in the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference Saturday after sweeping National University in their best-of-3 semifinals series at FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Tamaraws needed five sets to turn back error-prone National University, 25-14, 16-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-12, to close out their series.
Redijohn Paler showed the way for FEU with 17 points while John Paul Bugaoan scored 14. Raymond Bautista and national team member Peter Quiel finished with 9 points each for the Tams, who also took the series opener in 5 sets.
FEU will have to wait for a finals opponent after University of Santo Tomas upset erstwhile unbeaten Ateneo de Manila University, 25-22, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21, to even the series, 1-1.
The Tigers snapped the Blue Eagles' 8-game winning streak to force a do-or-die match on Monday.
The best-of-3 finals will begin on Wednesday.
Joshua Umandal finished with 23 points, all from attacks, while Arnold Bautista and Manuel Medina scored 16 and 13, respectively, for UST, which took advantage of Ateneo sitting out ace player Marck Espejo and captain Karl Baysa.
Espejo and Baysa are participating in the 80th UAAP beach volleyball tournament.
The Bulldogs gave away 33 points off errors and had a poor service reception as they allowed FEU to score eight aces.
John Vincent Ogoc slammed 18 kills in his 19-point outing while Fauzi Ismail and Madzlan Gampong scored 18 and 17 markers, respectively, for NU. Kim Malabunga finished with 11.
