MANILA – For a second straight time, the Philippines will be seeing action at the Division A level of the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup in Bengaluru, India in September, with the hopes of advancing to the Pre-Olympic Qualifiers Tournament.
According to the FIBA website, the Philippine women’s basketball team must avoid placing last in the standings in the Asia Cup to keep its possible Olympic bid alive.
The team will be parading University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Bruins’ Kalli Hayes in its roster for the regional competition.
The 23-year-old cager was a starter in her senior year in UCLA, norming 6.2 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. The Bruins are known to be one of the top women’s teams in the US, barging into the Elite 8 in 2017-2018.
Hayes will be joining the squad of national team coach Pat Aquino composed of six returning players from the 2017 squad, which includes Afril Bernardino and Jack Animam.
Bernardino shone for the country in the previous edition of the tournament, averaging 8.0 points, 3.2 boards, and 1.2 assists per contest.
The Philippine crew will be battling in Group B along with Australia, China, and New Zealand. They will first face the Aussies on September 24.
