To prepare for the country’s hosting of the 30th Southeast Asian Games in 2019, the Palace has ordered a more thorough, inclusive search for sports talent nationwide.
President Rodrigo Duterte said the search should include indigenous peoples and out-of-school kids who are waiting for a break to showcase their skills.
“I’m honored the Philippines will host the 30th SEA Games,” the President said while hosting Filipino medalists in the recently concluded 29th SEA Games at Malacañang on Wednesday.
“This will be an opportunity for us to look for talented Filipino athletes from all over the country. Thus, I enjoined the Philippine Sports Commission to widen its scope and recruit nationwide, look for the non-traditional places. Let us give them a chance to hone their talents.”
Duterte led the distribution of incentives to SEA Games medalists as part of the government’s reward system for excelling athletes.
He said such incentives should motivate local athletes to strive at future international competitions.
