NU's Camille Clarin looks to make a play against La Salle. UAAP

MANILA, Philippines -- National University (NU) handed De La Salle University a 54-point beatdown, 112-58, in the UAAP Season 82 women's basketball tournament on Wednesday at the Quadricentennial Pavilion of University of Santo Tomas.

NU's frontline took charge in a wire-to-wire victory, with Rhena Itesi tallying 20 points, 19 rebounds, and a block, while Jack Anima had 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Knowing that the Lady Archers are one of the contenders to watch in their bid for a sixth straight crown, NU head coach Patrick Aquino told his team to start aggressively.

"I told the girls to play hard. We've been coming off the start very slow. Going into the game, they are in it by the second quarter and then slow again in the third quarter," he said.

"I just want us to be consistent with everything - to start strong and finish stronger."

The Lady Bulldogs heeded their coach's instructions, outscoring La Salle, 29-9, in the opening frame to immediately take control. They led, 62-29, at the break after shooting 60% from the field in the first half.

Camille Clarin set the tone of the game for NU, scoring 11 of her 19 points in the first two quarters. Kaye Pingol and Kelli Hayes produced 14 and 11 markers, respectively.

Though La Salle tried to mount a third-quarter fightback, the lead was just too much to overcome as the Lady Bulldogs cruised to their 83rd consecutive victory.

Chuchi Paraiso and rookie Kent Pastrana paced the Lady Archers with 14 and 11 points.

La Salle dropped its second straight game, falling to 1-2.
