Filipino Vic Saludar failed to retain his WBO world minimumweight crown after dropping a 12-round decision to hometown fighter Wilfredo Mendez Sunday morning, Manila time in Puerto Rico.

The fight at the Puerto Rico Convention Center in San Juan saw Mendez convincing all three judges via scores of 117-110, 115-112 and 116-111.

The victory makes Mendez Puerto Rico's only world boxing title holder at the moment, ending that country's title drought since Emmanuel Rodriguez lost his IBF bantamweight belt in Glasgow, Scotland in May.

The 22-year-old Mendez improves to 14-1 with 5 knockouts while Saludar, 28, drops to 19-4, 10 via stoppage.

The Philippines meanwhile currently has four more titleholders namely WBO interim bantamweight belt holder John Riel Casimero, WBA bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire, Jr., IBF superflyweight kingpin Jerwin Ancajas and boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao who holds the WBA welterweight crown.
