Volleyball: Air Force routs Lyceum; Adamson, Perpetual win in Spikers’ Turf

MANILA, Philippines—Madz Gampong and Go For Gold—Air Force opened their title defense with an emphatic 25-11, 25-15, 25-18 win over Lyceum of the Philippines University in the 2019 Spikers’ Turf Open Conference at Paco Arena Tuesday.

Gampong fired 10 points, including 9 attacks to power the Jet Spikers’ opening-day win, while Ran Abdilla showed his all-around game, finishing with 9 points, 7 digs, and 4 receptions.

Nino Jeruz was a force above the net, tallying 4 blocks for 5 points, while Fauzi Ismail chipped in 7 points.

Lyceum captain Juvic Colonia had 8 points for the losing Pirates.

In the first game of the tournament, Adamson fought back from 2 sets down to escape feisty Emilio Aguinaldo College, 20-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-19, 15-12, in a 5-set thriller.

George Labang top-scored for the Soaring Falcons with 18 points, on 13 attacks and 5 blocks to go with 11 digs. Geffrey Alicando was stellar above the net with 16 points on 11 hits and 5 blocks.

On the other hand, Joshua Mina’s 22-point outing went down the drain, as he also had a stellar performance on the defensive end, tallying 20 excellent receptions and 13 digs.

Meanwhile, after dropping the first set, NCAA champion Perpetual Help downed Philippine Coast Guard 22-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-21.

Kennry Malinis led the Altas with 17 points on 11 attacks, 4 blocks, and 2 aces while Louie Ramirez fired 12 points.

The Dolphins, who are still winless in the Spikers’ Turf season, were led by Esmail Kasim with 15 points.
