MANILA, Philippines -- Ahead of a busy week that will see them play against two tough contenders, the Creamline Cool Smashers got a boost thanks to a quick triumph over Chef's Classics in the 2019 Premier Volleyball League Open Conference.
The defending champions cruised to a 25-12, 25-5, 25-15 triumph over the Red Spikers last Sunday, giving them a perfect 3-0 start to the tournament.
"Malaking bagay sa amin ['yung panalo]," said Creamline's Jema Galanza after the game, noting that they have a tough schedule ahead of them starting with a game against BanKo Perlas on Wednesday.
On Saturday, they play against PetroGazz in a rematch of the Reinforced Conference Finals.
"Mas confident kami sa game namin, and saka 'yung sabi ni Ate Ly (Alyssa Valdez), 'yung connection at saka 'yung chemistry namin, andoon na," Galanza added.
It was a comfortable triumph for the Cool Smashers, who posted 16-1 leads in both the first and second sets then wrapped up the match in just 66 minutes.
Galanza had 11 points in the win, while Valdez had 16 points -- including 7 service aces. The Cool Smashers were barely threatened throughout the match, and the lopsided nature of the game allowed Coach Tai Bundit to field in his reserves.
"'Yung mindset talaga namin every game is to really just do our part and play as a team," said Valdez, who recorded only 12 spike attempts in the game. "I think, 'yun talaga, 'yun ang hinahanda sa amin ni Coach Tai."
Both open spikers are hopeful that their strong play will carry over to their games against BanKo Perlas (2-1) and PetroGazz (1-1).
"I hope sana sa BanKo, talaga, lumabas lahat 'yun," said Galanza.
"Hopefully, magtuloy-tuloy lang 'to kasi ang mga future games din namin, mas matitibay, mas malalakas na teams 'yung makakalaban namin," Valdez said, for her part.
