MANILA—House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano said Monday the country's hosting of the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games will be the biggest edition of the biennial multi-sport event.
"It's going to be the biggest SEA Games ever, almost double nung mga dating SEA Games ang laki. Hopefully, it will be the best run at saka pinakamalaki sa broadcast," he told radio DZMM.
"Meron tayong e-sports na 6 medals, kung saan meron 2.3 billion players in the world. Anytime na 'pag na-televise 'tong games na 'to, mga 150 to 300 million nanonood. So malaking tsansa talaga na ipakita ang Clark, ang Pilipinas, ang ating mga atleta at ating kabataan," he added.
Cayetano said preparations have not been perfect, but he maintained problems are being addressed.
"Pero it's not without problems, but we're getting there, and I think it will be a very good hosting," he said.
Cayetano will lead a signing ceremony and press conference with Filipino-American musician apl.de.ap for the SEA Games at the House of Representatives on Tuesday afternoon.
The Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC) Foundation Inc., which is led by Cayetano, will also remain hands-on of the 30th SEA Games.
This, despite a report that President Rodrigo Duterte no longer wants the body to handle the SEA Games over alleged questionable deals.
PHISGOC was formally recognized by the president on Jan. 25 by issuing Memorandum Circular 56, which directs all government agencies and government-owned and controlled corporations to extend their full support to the body.—Report from RG Cruz, ABS-CBN News
