MANILA - (UPDATED) The PetroGazz Angels chalked up their first win of the 2019 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Open Conference after making quick work of the BaliPure Purest Water Defenders on Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Behind a superb game from middle blocker Jeanette Panaga, the Angels cruised to a 25-22, 25-18, 25-16 triumph, allowing them to recover from an opening day loss to BanKo Perlas.
Panaga put up 16 points on 12 kills, 3 blocks, and an ace, while Paneng Mercado added 9 points. The Angels peppered the Water Defenders with a whopping 42 attack points, while absorbing only 24 kills on their end.
"Last time (against BanKo Perlas), pagdating sa mindset, makikitang mong off talaga," PetroGazz coach Arnold Laniog said of his team. "Hindi totally naka-focus sa ginagawa last time."
The Angels had given away 30 points off errors in a four-set loss to the Pearl Spikers last Sunday, but limited themselves to 22 this time around.
"This time, nag-error pero yung mga error na for me is acceptable," said Laniog.
PetroGazz pulled away from a tight first set, 18-all, thanks to blocks by Maricar Baloaloa and Panaga that sparked a 4-0 burst that put them in control of the frame. They cruised to victory in the second set, but the Water Defenders put up a fight in the third set, even leading 9-7 off a quick hit by Satriani Espiritu.
But Panaga anchored a 7-0 blast, which saw the former St. Benilde star pounce on BaliPure's erratic reception, allowing PetroGazz to gain control, 14-9.
BaliPure would be unable to recover, and the Water Defenders slumped to their second straight defeat of the tournament. They have yet to win a game in the PVL this year.
Grazielle Bombita led the Water Defenders with 11 points.
