MANILA, Philippines -- De La Salle-College of St. Benilde opened its title-retention bid with a 4-0 demolition of Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) on Saturday in the NCAA Season 95 chess tournament at the San Beda campus.

Board 1 player Daryl Unix Samantila led the way for the Blazers as they gained an emphatic opening round victory.

Not to be outdone was last season's runner-up, Lyceum of the Philippines University, which claimed a 3-1 triumph over Mapua University.

In other round 1 results, Arellano University blanked Jose Rizal University (JRU), 4-0, while University of Perpetual Help nipped Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 2.5-1.5.

Defending juniors champion Perpetual Help, meanwhile, edged Letran 2.5-1.5 for a winning start as well, with Eric Labog Jr. leading the way at the top board.

Lyceum, last year's second placers, overpowered Mapua, 4-0, while San Beda University topped San Sebastian College, 3.5-.5. Meanwhile, EAC bested CSB-La Salle Greenhills, 3-1, and Arellano downed JRU, 3.5-.5, for other results in the juniors division.
