MANILA - BanKo Perlas recovered from a meltdown in the second set to take down PetroGazz, 25-20, 11-25, 25-21, 25-18, in their first game of the PVL Open Conference on Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Dzi Gervacio (14 points) and Nicole Tiamzon (12) took turns in scoring for the Pearl Spikers, while Kathy Bersola, Sue Roces, and Ella de Jesus provided ample support.
The Pearl Spikers scored 11 points off aces, and got 30 free points from PetroGazz's errors.
It was a sorry start for the Angels, who had triumphed in the Reinforced Conference last month but missed the presence of their powerful imports in Janisa Johnson and Wilma Salas.
Jovie Prado led PetroGazz with 13 points, while Jeanette Panaga had 10 markers. Paneng Mercado and Cherry Nunag each had 9 points.
Unfortunately for PetroGazz, they were unable to build on a strong second frame, and the Pearl Spikers held them off in the third and fourth sets.
