MANILA, Philippines -- Defending champion Petron claimed its eighth consecutive win in decisive fashion, as the Blaze Spikers overpowered Sta. Lucia, 25-13, 25-10, 25-13, in the 2019 Philippine Superliga (PSL) All-Filipino Conference Tuesday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
Sisi Rondina led the Blaze Spikers with 22 points on 18 kills, two blocks, and two aces, while adding seven digs. Ces Molina (7 points) and Remy Palma (6) also had their moments, while Bernadeth Pons contributed 5 points and 7 digs.
Petron was playing sans veteran middle blocker Mika Reyes.
"I'm happy and satisfied with the win. We showed another great performance but we have to work harder so we could sustain our momentum for our succeeding matches," said Petron coach Shaq delos Santos.
The Blaze Spikers improved to 10-1 in the tournament to stay at No. 2.
It is possible that they will face the Lady Realtors again in the quarterfinals, if Sta. Lucia stays in 7th place.
"With our standings right now, we might face them again in the quarterfinals. We have to prepare well for that. But for now we need to focus on our last three preliminary matches," said delos Santos.
Petron peppered Sta. Lucia with 38 kills, while the Lady Realtors only mustered 16 attacks. The Blaze Spikers also fired eight aces, while Sta. Lucia failed to score from the service line and gave up 21 points off their errors.
Sta. Lucia was without Fil-Am spiker MJ Phillips, who had to return to the United States for family reasons. Reserve spiker Jasmine Alcayde was activated in her place.
Rachel Austero and Amanda Villanueva delivered seven points apiece for the Lady Realtors, who dropped to 2-11.
