MANILA -- Defending champion Barangay Ginebra sent Magnolia packing with a 106-80 beating in their PBA Commissioner's Cup quarterfinals game to advance to the semifinals at the Araneta Coliseum on Tuesday.
Justin Brownlee led the way with 30 points including 3 triples to go with 9 rebounds and 6 assists to make sure the Gin Kings complete their conquest of the Hotshots in their best-of-three series.
Mark Caguioa also played quality minutes for Ginebra, dishing out 12 points on 5-of-5 field goal shooting in just 14 minutes.
The Gin Kings were already up 47-39 in the first half, but used a mighty 40-21 push in the third quarter to widen the gap to as much as 27 points.
Ginebra led by as much as 35 markers, forcing Magnolia to attempt to just trim the deficit before the final buzzer.
“Certainly, this is a big surprise for us,” said Gin Kings mentor Tim Cone.
“We didn’t expect this. We were really determined tonight because we came out and not played well in Game 2s in the last couple of conferences against this team. It was really on us to come out and change the narrative and make it different.”
Ginebra opened their quarterfinals series with an 85-79 victory in the opener last Saturday.
Mark Barroca topscored Magnolia with 17 points. Rakeem Christmas had 15 markers for the Hotshots who were booted out of the competition with 6 straight losses.
