MANILA, Philippines -- The UAAP's 82nd season, which ended prematurely because of the novel coronavirus pandemic, will be officially closed on July 25 through a virtual ceremony.
Outgoing president Em Fernandez of Season 82 host Ateneo de Manila University confirmed to ABS-CBN News that the segments of the ceremony are already taped, including the awarding of the general championship to University of Santo Tomas and the handover of hosting duties to De La Salle University.
The ceremony, which will run for over an hour, will shine a spotlight on the athletes who were unable to complete their campaigns because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The UAAP was forced to cancel its season on April 7, leaving the volleyball tournaments and the men's football tournament unfinished. Competitions in women's football tournament, baseball, softball, athletics, lawn tennis, and 3x3 basketball did not start at all.
"We did not like what happened, because hindi natapos 'yung sport, but we all know naman na this is bigger than sports," Fernandez said.
"Lalabas 'yun doon sa closing ceremonies, just to highlight na, one, as a community, as a nation, we are here to help everyone, that's one," he said. "And two, itong mga atleta na 'to na mga hindi nakapaglaro or natapos, they are part of Season 82."
Ateneo will also come out with a coffeetable book to commemorate the season, with a possible release in September.
UST won the UAAP general championship after winning five championships in the seniors division -- men's and women's beach volleyball, men's and women's table tennis, and men's judo. However, the UAAP will not recognize an Athlete of the Year for the season.
