MANILA – (UPDATED) The PetroGazz Angels regained their winning ways by sweeping PacificTown-Army, 29-27, 25-20, 25-14, in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference on Sunday at the Alonte Sports Arena.
The Angels saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday against the Creamline Cool Smashers, but refused to succumb to another loss a day later.
They were tested by a veteran PacificTown-Army team, with the Lady Troopers saving five set points in the opening set.
A clever drop by Olena Lymareva-Flink knotted the count for the last time at 27, before PetroGazz's Cuban import, Wilma Salas, imposed her will. She scored off Army setter Alina Bicar, then served up an ace to secure the opening set 1, 29-27.
The Lady Troopers continued to stay in the hunt in the second set, trailing just 22-20 when Jeanette Panaga came alive. The veteran middle blocker scored PetroGazz's last three points of the set, including back-to-back aces to finish off PacificTown-Army.
With momentum on their side, the Angels cruised to victory in the third frame to improve to 8-1, and claim the solo lead in the league standings.
Salas finished with 22 points on 18 kills, 2 blocks, and 2 aces, while skipper Janisa Johnson added 21 points. The Angels unloaded 50 kills on PacificTown-Army, while the Lady Troopers managed just 37.
PacificTown dropped to 4-4, though they remain in third place in the standings and have the inside track on a spot in the Final 4.
Lymareva-Flink was the lone double-digit scorer for the Lady Troopers with 16 points.
