MANILA, Philippines – Sol Mercado penned an emotional letter to Barangay Ginebra and its faithful fans after he was traded to the NorthPort Batang Pier on Tuesday afternoon.
Mercado is headed to NorthPort along with Jervy Cruz and Kevin Ferrer, while Ginebra is getting explosive guard Stanley Pringle in the blockbuster trade.
In a letter posted to his social media accounts, Mercado admitted that he is "going through a truckload of emotions right now."
The 35-year-old guard, who was traded to Ginebra in May 2015, became emotional upon receiving messages from the barangay faithful, whom he called the "best fans in the world."
"There is nothing like being appreciated by the people who watch every game and witness how much you give to their beloved team," Mercado wrote. "Thank you for these past four years. I can honestly say it's been the best years of my career."
Mercado helped Ginebra win three titles, including a breakthrough championship in the 2016 PBA Governors' Cup.
The guard, who is averaging 6.67 points and 3.5 rebounds per game in the ongoing Commissioner's Cup, admitted that while he is hurting, his heart is also full.
"I'm so grateful and thankful for the opportunity I had to put on that jersey," he said. "From the coaches to the players, we became family and that will never end."
