MANILA, Philippines – PetroGazz import Wilma Salas has been sensational for the Angels throughout her stint in the 2019 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference.
Entering their game against BanKo-Perlas on Wednesday, the Cuban import was averaging 26.4 points per game for a PetroGazz team that had won all its games via sweep.
Salas reached another level against the Perlas Spikers as she unloaded 37 points on 35 kills and 2 blocks, lifting her team to a 25-23, 25-11, 22-25, 25-20 triumph.
She was at her best in the second set, when she repeatedly pounced on BanKo's poor reception for easy kills.
"I feel that BanKo-Perlas is a strong team, they played very good," said Salas afterward. "But I feel happy for this [win]. Every time I play, I try my best."
Salas is becoming more comfortable with asking for the ball, which she did against BanKo-Perlas on Wednesday after their opponents shockingly took a set off them.
"Every time, I speak to the setter, give me [the] ball, give me [the] ball," said Salas. "The setter, every time, [shows] confidence with me. For me, it's super."
While she has breached the 30-point mark before, Salas believes that her 37-point explosion against BanKo-Perlas "is my best."
She wants to make sure that more explosive performances will follow, especially as PetroGazz continues to receive the best shot of their foes.
"I hope for more, sure," said Salas when asked if more 30-point games can be expected from her.
Salas had help on Wednesday as fellow import and team captain Janisa Johnson added 24 points.
Jeanette Panaga was PetroGazz's top local player with 9 points, including 2 blocks and 2 aces.
