James Martinez fired a career-high 7 3-pointers, while Jayjay Helterbrand had an impressive debut as Imus Bandera Khaleb Shawarma escaped with a 78-75 overtime win over the Caloocan Supremos Victory Liner in the MPBL Lakan Cup at Caloocan Sports Complex on Thursday.
Martinez waxed hot from the perimeter to finish with 26 points, helping to break Caloocan's 5-game winning streak at home dating to the league's debut season.
Actor turned baller Gerald Anderson added 6 points and 1 steal.
"Long way to go, 29 games pa. Three days pa lang kami nagte-train kaya kapaan pa. Buti nandito si kuya Jayjay, at buti't nag-step up din ang iba," said Martinez, who also played for Powerade in the PBA.
Helterbrand, 42, also played a big part in Imus' victory with a do-it-all game, finishing with 14 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists and 2 steals.
"It was a great great experience," said the former Barangay Ginebra Gin King, who was all smiles after the win.
Helterbrand said he still needs to get into game shape, but he was impressed by the way Caloocan battled them.
"Man, I'm tired. I need to get back in shape. My first real game in a long time," he said.
Prior to their defeat, the Supremos hadn't lost at home for the past 5 games since the Anta Rajah Cup.
However, they struggled with their shots in the end despite getting open looks.
Almond Vosotros led Caloocan with 15 points.
In the first game, the Pampanga Long Giant Lanterns overpowered the General Santos City Warriors to notch a first victory.
Former pro Michael Juico led the way for Pampanga, which essayed a 94-85 win.
