MANILA, Philippines – The Jose Rizal University (JRU) Light Bombers stunned the top-seeded Lyceum of the Philippines Junior Pirates, 77-55, to bag the crown in the 2018 SMART City Hoops 19-Under Summer Classic on Saturday at the Greenhills West Indoor Court.
The Light Bombers were coming off a tough victory over the Adamson University Baby Falcons last Thursday, while the Junior Pirates were well-rested after ending the elimination round as the No. 1 seed.
With the Pirates closing the gap to five points, the Light Bombers unleashed a 7-0 run to enter the fourth period with a comfortable 53-41 lead. Their hot streak continued in the fourth frame, as they opened the payoff period with a 6-0 run ignited by a Ronald Bucoy jumper.
After JRU made it 59-43, Lyceum reeled off seven straight points thanks to Nathaniel Tulabut, but the Light Bombers had an answer for every single one of their rallies.
The Light Bombers forced the Junior Pirates to commit 25 turnovers, and limited them to only 35 shots throughout the game.
Cadell Buno led the Light Bombers with 14 points while Hommer Macatangay added 10 points, four rebounds, and eight assists.
For the runner-ups, John Barba had 12 points while Nathaniel Tulabut added 10 points, six rebounds, and three steals.
Batang Gilas standout Mac Guadana scored only six points in 1-of-7 shooting from the field.
