MANILA, Philippines—After watching their daughter crowned UAAP's Most Valuable Player but lose Game 2 of the finals, Alona Rondina will be returning with her entire family to Cebu City with hopes that daughter Sisi and the UST Golden Tigresses can win the title this weekend.
On Wednesday, the Ateneo Lady Eagles forced a do-or-die match against the Tigresses via 26-24, 14-25, 25-21, 25-15 victory at Mall of Asia Arena, which featured Rondina's family, who were flown in thanks to the UST community's help.
The elder Rondina told ABS-CBN News that she remained happy for her daughter despite the Game 2 loss.
According to Alona, they will be watching Game 3 closely on TV, and they will also offer a mass in Compostela, Cebu, the Rondinas' hometown, before the series decider on Saturday.
"Tomorrow (Thursday), uuwi na. OK lang naman, may TV naman. At least nakita namin si Sisi. Magpapamisa na lang ako sa amin," Alona said.
She also bared her message of encouragement to Sisi when they met after Game 2
" 'OK lang ’yan anak, may isa pa. Pwede pang lumaban. Sa sinabi mo nga, bilog ang bola. Nu’ng una sa inyo, ’yung sumunod kanila, sa susunod atin naman. Kami naman. Tayo naman,'" Alona said.
Rondina's mother, a volleyball player during her high-school days, talked about the defeat in a manner similar to Sisi.
"Ganun talaga, sa laban walang talo, walang panalo. Basta lumalaban ka, panalo ka. Ganoon lang ’yun. ’Wag kang mag-expect ng mataas kasi once nag-expect ka ng mataas, masakit ’yan. ’Yun lagi kong sinasabi sa anak ko, 'Laban lang’. Hanggang sa dulo," Alona said.
She said what impresses her most about her daughter is her character.
"I'm a proud mother na naging anak ko si Sisi. Matapang. Hindi natatakot kung sino kalaban niya. Laban lang siya. 'Yun naman ang goal niya, manalo. Kaya sabi ko basta laban anak," Alona said.
