MANILA, Philippines -- University of the East's (UE) Mean Mendrez was forced to sit out their penultimate game of UAAP Season 81 as she is still recovering from an illness sustained over the Holy Week break.

Mendrez, who has scored a total of 159 points for UE in the women's volleyball tournament, was not in action when they absorbed a 17-25, 16-25, 19-25 loss to defending champion De La Salle University on Wednesday.

"Noong nasa Baguio ako, nagkasakit ako. Sobrang init doon," said Mendrez. "Andoon ako noong Holy Week. Pag-uwi namin, lumala na siya."

Mendrez eventually got high fever and tonsillitis, and had to take antibiotics. She was thus unable to fully join the Lady Warriors' practice, and coach Karl Dimaculangan decided not to risk playing her.

While she was not thrilled to have missed their game against the Lady Spikers, Mendrez does see a silver lining to their circumstances.

"Blessing in disguise, kasi nakalaro si Ate Jas," she said, referring to veteran spiker Jasmine Alcayde. "Last playing (year) na din niya."

"Maganda din na 'di ako nakalaro, para sama-sama silang graduating," Mendrez said.

Alcayde finished with four points in their loss to the Lady Spikers.

The Lady Warriors will wrap up their campaign on Sunday, when they take on league-leading Ateneo de Manila University. The Katipunan spikers are looking to secure the No. 1 seed in the final 4 in that game.

"Iniisip lang namin na lumaban lang, kasi wala naman sa amin 'yung pressure," said Mendrez, who hopes to return against Ateneo. "All out na lang, kasi last two games na lang, and last playing years na ng iba."
