MANILA, Philippines -- San Miguel veteran Arwind Santos is on track to become the latest member of the PBA's 10,000-point club.
According to the league, Santos now has 9,334 points in his storied career after scoring 18 points in San Miguel's season-opening game against Magnolia, a 94-78 win for the defending All-Filipino champions.
He currently trails No. 19 Arnie Tuadles (9,430), No. 18 Vergel Meneses (9,453) and No. 17 Manny Victorino (9,596) in the scoring ladder.
Santos averaged 9.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.5 assists last season, helping the Beermen win the Philippine and Commissioner's Cups.
However, his march to history is currently on hold as all PBA activities are suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Before the league was halted, Santos had expressed his determination to elevate his level of play for the Beermen, who will be playing without reigning Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo due to injury.
"Sinabi nga nila, ako 'yung huling nag-MVP bago si June Mar, dire-diretso," said Santos. "So, subukan ko, at least namo-motivate ako. Nagiging positive siya sa akin, kaya maganda na rin 'yun. Okay lang sa akin 'yun."
Meanwhile, Rain or Shine guard James Yap is also closing in on the Top 10 in the scoring list. He has a total of 10,792 points, just 76 points away from Jerry Codinera (No. 11).
