Magnolia and Northport will play catch up on Wednesday night, and try to grab the last ride to the PBA Philippine Cup playoffs.

The two squads will be squaring off at the Araneta Coliseum at 7 p.m. hoping to improve their standings.

The Hotshots (3-5) were picking up steam in their playoffs bid but got thwarted by Barangay Ginebra Kings in overtime last Sunday.

"We need to play with a sense of urgency. Kailangan manalo at makabwelo for a strong finish in the elims," said Magnolia coach Chito Victolero in the PBA website.

"We need to play our game and have that defensive mindset for 48 minutes.”

The Batang Pier, on the other hand, are still having problems closing out games, dropping their last 5 outings after zooming to a 2-0 start.

"We are having trouble in the fourth quarter. You could see in 100 percent of our losses that we kinda lose our momentum in the fourth," said NorthPort main frontcourt player Moala Tautuaa.

In the 4:30 p.m. curtain raiser, Alaska and Meralco will also be jostling for places in the quarterfinals.

The Aces (3-5) need to win to not only to arrest a 3-game funk, but also to stay in contention for the Philippine Cup.

For its part, Meralco (3-6) is looking to switch places with Alaska and from there push for inclusion among the top 8 teams advancing to the playoffs.

"Once again, it's practically a do or die for both teams so we are expecting an intense battle with Alaska," said Bolts coach Norman Black.

"Handling their full court defensive pressure will be a main key," added Black.
