MANILA -- (UPDATED) Magnolia used a massive scoring run in the fourth quarter to cripple Columbian, 109-83, in the PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Ian Sangalang established the game for the Hotshots, shooting 7-out-of-15 from the field for 16 points to go with his 6 rebounds.
Coach Chito Victolero said he is happy with the way they have defended the Dyip, citing the importance of the match.
“Pinagusapan namin before the game ‘yung importance nito. Columbian is also gunning for the playoffs; kami ganoon din,” said Victolero.
“'Yung playoff mentality namin idinagdag namin umpisa sa last game namin sa Alaska. At least masaya kasi 'yung rhythm namin at 'yung aming defensive mindset nand'yan na.”
The win boosted Magnolia's stock, fanning hopes to reach the quarterfinal round after starting their campaign with a 0-3 record in the season-opening tournament.
Mark Barroca added 14 points for the Hotshots, while Rome Dela Rosa and Aldrech Ramos had 12 and 10, respectively.
Rashawn McCarthy paced the Dyip with 19 markers, while CJ Perez had 14.
“Our goal was to limit Columbian under 90 points, limit our turnovers and limit their turnover points and fastbreak points,” said Victolero.
The Hotshots climbed to 3-4, while dealing the Dyip's sixth defeat in 10 games.
