MANILA, Philippines – Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio on Sunday expressed his pride over Gilas Pilipinas' triumph against Indonesia in the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 qualifiers.
The Philippines bucked a slow-start and a foul-plagued game to rout Indonesia, 100-70, at the BritAma Arena in Jakarta for a successful start to their qualifying campaign.
"The future of Philippine basketball is bright," Panlilio said in a statement after the game. "Gilas Pilipinas men made us proud once again with their dominant victory against Indonesia."
It was Thirdy Ravena who led the way in Gilas' triumph, scoring 23 points off the bench on top of 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. Roger Pogoy was his usual solid self, tallying 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting along with 6 rebounds.
The game showed the potential of the young players selected by interim head coach Mark Dickel. Outside of Ravena, Juan Gomez de Liano (10 points), Dwight Ramos (5 points, 5 rebounds), and Matt Nieto (team-high 6 assists) also had productive stints on the floor.
"What we saw in the game against Indonesia was just a glimpse of what could be," Panlilio said.
"We're all excited to explore what's next in the development of our young players and the whole team," he added.
The Philippines return to action on November 27, when they take on rivals South Korea, and on November 30 when they play Thailand.
