MANILA, Philippines – National University (NU) coach Dante Alinsunurin is keeping his expectations modest for Edward Camposano, who will finally play for the Bulldogs in the UAAP Season 82 men's volleyball tournament.
Camposano, the Season 77 Rookie of the Year, transferred to NU from University of the East (UE) in December 2017 and sat out the next two seasons.
"Siyempre, naturuan na rin namin siya ng sistema sa NU," Alinsunurin said of Camposano, who suited up with his future teammates for Sta. Elena in the Spikers' Turf during the UAAP offseason.
Even though the Red Warriors struggled – winning just two games in his three seasons with the team – Camposano still served as a bright spot for the team.
Thus, expectations are high for Camposano, who emerged as the league's Best Blocker in Season 78, when he was just a sophomore. Already, he is tipped to fill in the void left by Bryan Bagunas, who led the Bulldogs to their second straight title last year and won MVP honors along the way.
Yet Alinsunurin is not asking Camposano to immediately shoulder a heavy load for NU.
"Sabi ko lang sa kanya, maging consistent lang ang ginagawa niya," he said. "Ayoko lang 'yung sobrang baba ng ginagawa niya sa laro, 'yung mga porsyento niya sa ginagawa, like service, opensa."
"Basta ang gusto ko lang sa kanya, maging leader din siya, and taasan niya 'yung porsyento niya sa ginagawa niya," he stressed.
They will still need Camposano's firepower, but NU has plenty of options aside from the former UE standout.
The three-peat seeking Bulldogs will be anchored by James Natividad and Nico Almendras, both of whom were former Rookies of the Year themselves. Setter Joshua Retamar, who emerged as a star during the 30th Southeast Asian Games, holds the keys to NU's offense, and veteran libero Ricky Marcos is expected to be as steady as ever.
All Alinsunurin needs from Camposano, he said, is solid play.
"Sabi ko lang sa kanya, maglaro ka lang," said the coach. "Taasan mo lang ang porsyento. Angatan mo pa."
