MANILA -- Kapamilya star Jerome Ponce was the luckiest man Monday night holding the hand of the very stunning Mika Reyes as the former De La Salle University star accepted her award as the Philippine Sportswriters Association’s (PSA) 2016 Miss Volleyball.
Arriving together at the Le Pavillon in Pasay City for the formal gala night of the PSA’s Annual Awards, the couple turned heads with the statuesque Reyes looking very elegant in her long maroon gown.
The 22-year-old Reyes was feted by the country’s oldest media organization for her feat in the year that was after leading the Lady Spikers to reclaiming the UAAP crown, helping F2 Logistics win its breakthrough Philippine Superliga title and participating in the 2016 FIVB Women’s Club World Championship.
Reyes took the spotlight in a night of celebration and honoring the country’s best athletes.
Ponce, who rose to stardom as Luke in the hit noontime soap "Be Careful With My Heart," was very proud of the achievements of his girlfriend, who was given a red carpet, movie star treatment as photographers flashed their cameras on the 5-foot-11 Petron volleybelle, getting interviewed on TV and some fans asking for selfies.
"Well siyempre she deserves it, she deserves kung ano man ang pinaghirapan niya," said the very supportive Ponce. "No one knows kung anong pinaghirapan niya except her, siya lang. For me kinuwento niya sa akin ang some and that’s so much for me. Para sa akin kung anuman 'yung some na 'yun na naging efforts niya at hirap niya sa industriya nila eh sobra na sa akin. Kaya para sa akin she deserves it.”
Being in the showbiz for quite some time, Ponce knows that some bashers will try to pull her down especially with the recognition and successes she is now receiving.
"Para sa akin wala naman magbabago, mabasa mo man o hindi (ang nasa social media), wala namang magbabago. Siguro 'yung nga taong may pakialam lang sa mga bashers (ang maaapektuhan). Ano ba makukuha ng mga bashers wala naman? Siya rin naman ang nagturo sa akin na baliwalain na lang," said Ponce, who is to star in the upcoming Star Cinema movie "Ghost Bride" with Kim Chiu and Matteo Guidicceli.
Asked by ABS-CBN Sports if his girlfriend, a Virtual Playground talent and could be the next showbiz star of the management after volleyball player turned actor Johnvic De Guzman of the hit movie "Seklusyon," is open to enter his field, Ponce said that showbiz is not Reyes’ thing.
"Hindi naman kami nag-uusap regarding that (Mika entering showbiz) and mukhang hindi naman siya interesado, hindi naman niya nasasabi sa akin. minsan pa-joke joke pero hindi talaga," he said.
We just hope Reyes will change her mind because the “MiRome” tandem do have that kilig-factor as seen on the eve of Valentine’s Day.
