(UPDATE) A Filipino-American was among the 12 fatalities in a mass shooting at a crowded bar in Thousand Oaks, California on Thursday (Manila time).
USA Today identified the victim as 18-year-old Alaina Housley, a freshman in Pepperdine University.
Her mother was identified as Hannah Punzalan Housley, according to Balitang America.
Alaina was a niece of Hollywood actress Tamera Mowry-Housley.
"Our hearts are broken. We just learned that our niece Alaina was one of the victims of last night’s shooting at Borderline bar in Thousand Oaks," said a statement issued to USA TODAY on behalf of Mowry-Housley and her husband, former Fox News correspondent Adam Housley.
"Alaina was an incredible young woman with so much life ahead of her and we are devastated that her life was cut short in this manner. We thank everyone for your prayers and ask for privacy at this time."
The Philippines, through its Foreign Affairs Department, condoled with Housley's family in a statement made public early Friday (Manila time).
"The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) expresses its deepest condolences to the family of Alaina Punzalan Housley," the statement read.
"The Consulate General is checking with authorities if there are other members of the 25,879 Filipinos and Filipino-Americans in Ventura Country who are among the dead or injured in the incident," the DFA said.
The gunman was identified by authorities as Ian David Long, 28, who shot himself after the massacre.
He was found dead in the office of the Borderline Bar and Grill, located in Thousand Oaks, a suburb about 40 miles (64 km) northwest of Los Angeles after the incident at about 11:30 p.m. PST on Wednesday (0730 GMT Thursday)
Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean told a news conference that Long had apparently fired at random with a .45-caliber Glock handgun with an extra-capacity magazine. There was no known motive, he said.
"Obviously he had something going on in his head that would cause him to do something like this," Dean said. "Obviously he had some sort of issues."
Long was in the Marine Corps from 2008 to 2013, reaching the rank of corporal, and served as a machine gunner who was deployed to Afghanistan for 8 months. Dean said it was possible that Long had suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.
The bar shooting was the latest mass killing in the United States and was sure to revive the debate on gun control. Less than 2 weeks ago 11 worshippers at a synagogue in Pittsburgh were killed by a man shouting "All Jews must die." - with report from Reuters
