Officials from multiple states have launched a safety campaign following a tragic incident in Fairfield, California where a Filipino motorist and a highway patrol officer were killed.

On August 10, 49-year old Filipino Jaime Bueza Manuel from Vallejo, California and Officer Kirk Griess were killed during a traffic stop on Interstate 80 at North Texas Street in Fairfield.

Griess just pulled over Manuel when a distracted driver struck them both with his vehicle.

Manuel, who migrated to the US 10 years ago, worked as a caregiver.

A GoFundMe page has been setup to help Manuel’s family as they cope with their loss.

The roadside tragedy prompted the California Highway Patrol to teamup with its Nevada counterpart to launch the I-80 Challenge particularly for the coming Labor Day weekend.

Interstate 80 runs from San Francisco to the Utah state line.

During the I-80 Challenge period, highway patrol officers will increase traffic safety operations to educate drivers and, if necessary, take enforcement action on those who violate traffic laws.
