MANILA - Officials have yet to verify if a Filipino worker in Kuwait was raped by a policeman in the Middle Eastern country, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said Friday.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) earlier said a Filipina worker who recently arrived in Kuwait was reportedly raped and assaulted by a 22-year-old Kuwaiti.
"Hindi pa kumpirmado. 'Yung police officer na mga 22-years-old naaresto na and he is being investigated," Bello told DZMM's Kabayan.
"Whether it is rape or not, hindi pa alam ng Kuwaiti government. Tinututukan din nila," he said.
"Sabi ko gagawa tayo ng appropriate action unless we see that your government is doing something about it," he said.
The Kuwaiti government has extended legal assistance to the victim, he said.
Last year, President Rodrigo Duterte banned overseas Filipino workers from going to Kuwait after a Filipina was brutally killed in the Middle Eastern nation.
The ban was lifted after Manila reached a deal with Kuwait to provide "optimum and maximum" protection for Filipino workers there.
