MANILA - Supreme Court Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin on Monday called for a stop to senseless acts of violence against lawyers and judges.
This, following a series of killings of lawyers in the Philippines.
"Chief Justice Lucas P. Bersamin joins the Integrated Bar of the Philippines in condemning in the strongest possible terms the recent spate of killings of lawyers, including judges, and calls on the concerned authorities to put an immediate stop to these senseless acts of violence within the bounds of the law, and bring the perpetrators to justice," his office said in a statement.
Bersamin also said he will seek an independent investigation on the string of killings involving lawyers and judges.
The IBP earlier urged the Supreme Court to "take immediate action" on the killings.
Lawyer and AKO Bicol Party-list Rep. Rodel Batocabe was killed on Saturday. Another IBP member, Erfe del Castillo, survived an ambush on Dec. 21 in Talisay City, Negros Occidental.
The group also cited the recent slay of Benjamin Ramos, secretary general of the National Union of Peoples' Lawyers (NUPL) in Negros. - report from Mike Navallo, ABS-CBN News
