MANILA - A deadly quake that jolted Mindanao over the weekend "totally damaged" at least 2 public structures that withstood 4 previous powerful tremors, officials said Monday.

The city hall in Magsaysay, Davao Del Sur and a public market in Cotabato province can no longer be used after Sunday's magnitude 6.9 quake, said National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Spokesperson Mark Timbal.

"Noong October 2019 series of earthquakes, affected na sila, nagkaroon na ito ng either minor or partial damage," Office of Civil Defense-Davao Region acting information officer Francis Irag said of these buildings.

"Noong nagkaroon ng magnitude 6.9 earthquake kahapon, talagang natuluyan na," he added.

(During the October 2019 series of quakes, these were affected, they sustained either minor or partial damage. When the magnitude 6.9 tremor struck yesterday, they became totally damaged.)

Four other quakes above 6.0 magnitude hit roughly the same area of Mindanao between October and December, sending tens of thousands into evacuation centers because their homes were damaged or they were too afraid to return, officials earlier said.

The latest quake also "partially damaged" 315 houses and 11 public buildings in Davao Del Sur, said Timbal.

Rescuers on Monday continued sifting through rubble to rescue several people feared trapped under a grocery store that collapsed in Padada, Davao Del Sur, added Irag.
