CEBU CITY- A former lawyer was arrested in Cebu City Tuesday afternoon on cyberlibel charges after he accused some Cebu City prosecutors of being corrupt.
Doce-Pares grandmaster and former lawyer Dionisio Cañete was arrested by operatives of Anti-Cybercrime Unit in Central Visayas by virtue of an arrest warrant for two counts of cyberlibel.
The arrest warrant against the 81-year-old arnis grandmaster stemmed from a libel complaint filed by a prosecutor under the Cebu City Prosecutor's Office for alleged malicious comments Cañete posted on social media.
According to Cañete, the comments were posted three years ago on his social media account exposing around 15 prosecutors under Cebu City Prosecutor's Office of their alleged corruption.
"I am calling the proper parties to investigate the case galing ang mag-imbestigar sanga wala kay mahimo but I hope the Presidente will act on this because this is becoming too serious corruption in Cebu City Prosecutor's Office if very serious," Cañete said.
(I am calling the proper parties to investigate the case but if the one who will investigate is also a partner, still you can't do anything but I hope the President will act on this because this is becoming too serious corruption in Cebu City Prosecutor's Office if very serious.)
The court has set a P30,000 bond for each count but Cañete said he would rather be in jail than to post bail for his temporary freedom.
Cañete was the former president of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Cebu Province Chapter from 1983 to 1986.
He ended his 56-year career as a lawyer around two years ago after he surrendered his license to the Supreme Court as form of protest against alleged widespread corruption in the judiciary and the prosecution service.
