BACOLOD — Catholic churches here marked International Human Rights Day by tolling their bells and celebrating Masses.
The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines directed all Bacolod churches to ring their bells at 10 a.m. and hold 5 p.m. Masses to encourage parishioners in protecting human rights, said the diocese's Social Action Director Fr. Chris Gonzales.
"The Catholic Church continues to call on all of us to be vigilant, to protect the rights of each one especially that Christmas is coming... I don’t think that there is any more beautiful message that the Lord could give us than to love one another especially to respect the rights and the life of each one," he said.
The Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry is seeking an audience with city officials and the police over a spate of killings in the last 2 months.
The body of a businessman was found in a vacant lot in Barangay Mandalagan last week. The phrase "I love drugs' was painted on his body.
A woman meanwhile was gunned down by unidentified assailants outside the Bacolod City Police Office in August.
