MANILA - An Olongapo City court on Wednesday convicted the self-confessed gunman behind the killing of businessman Dominic Sytin and his bodyguard in Subic last year.
Olongapo City Regional Trial Court Branch 72 sentenced Edgardo Luib to reclusion perpetua or 40 years of imprisonment for Sytin's murder and between 6 to 12 years for the frustrated murder of Sytin's bodyguard Efren Espartero.
Luib, who was arrested in Batangas in March for a different murder case, had admitted to shooting Sytin and Espartero allegedly upon the orders of the victim's younger sibling Alan Dennis.
The court, meanwhile, denied Dennis Sytin's motion to quash or suspend the implementation of arrest warrants against him.
Dennis and co-accused Oliver Fuentes alias Ryan Rementilla remain at large.
The younger Sytin earlier denied involvement, saying he was "not capable of murder."
Police, however, said it was looking at an alleged fight over control of shares in United Auctioneers Inc. (UAI), one of the country's biggest auction firms, prior to the killing.
