MANILA -- Only transparent bags will be allowed inside Southeast Asian Games venues in December, as the police readied 15,000 of its men to secure the Philippine capital during the biennial event, authorities said.
The "clear bag policy" was agreed upon by SEA Games coordinators and the Philippine National Police, authorities said.
The deployment will include bomb-sniffing dogs and bomb disposal personnel. Troops will also help manage traffic flow and secure athletes while in transit, said Police Brig. Gen. Debold Sinas.
Permits to carry firearms outside residence will be suspended in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, and La Union from Nov. 20 to Dec. 14.
Some 10,000 athletes are expected to participate in the 30th SEA Games from Nov. 30 to Dec. 11.
