MANILA- Opposition Senator Antonio Trillanes IV criticized Thursday President Rodrigo Duterte for sleeping while other world leaders held meetings during a summit in Singapore.

Duterte's fiercest critic, Trillanes said the President's naps can either be indicators of his health condition or supposed laziness, noting that it's a "big problem" for the Philippines.

"It could only be one of two things: he is either seriously ill that he could no longer perform his functions as President; or he is simply too lazy and irresponsible," Trillanes said in a statement.

"Either way, that's a big problem for our country," he added.

Duterte on Wednesday missed the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summits with Australia and South Korea, a working lunch with ASEAN host and Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Summit.

The President also opted to skip the gala dinner hosted by Singapore, this year’s ASEAN chairman.

Malacañang sad Duterte was exhausted and had to take "power naps."

When asked by reporters Thursday on whether he already felt better after his power naps, Duterte said: “Still not good enough, but enough to sustain the endurance for the last days. Why what’s wrong with my nap? I do not eat breakfast and I’m sure you ladies know that.”
