MANILA—President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the "disestablishment" of the Pasig River rehabilitation body, after he transferred the river's rehabilitation to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

In a copy of Executive Order 93 released to the media Wednesday night, the President ordered the disestablishment of the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC).

The powers previously held by the PRRC were transferred to other agencies, such as the Manila Bay Task Force, which will "harness the Pasig River's potential for transportation, recreation and tourism", and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), which will be in charge of enforcing other laws relevant to the rehabilitation of the Pasig River.

Duterte first brought up the idea of dissolving the PRRC in September, saying the river is "uncleanable."

The Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC) was formed through an executive order signed by then-President Joseph Estrada on Jan. 6, 1999 to rehabilitate the river connecting the Laguna de Bay and the Manila Bay and cuts across Metro Manila.

Duterte earlier transferred the chairmanship of the PRRC to the DENR from the Department of Budget and Management.

PRRC former head Jose Antonio Goitia was earlier sacked due to allegations of corruption.
