MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday said it is up to congressmen to decide if they would uphold the term-sharing agreement between House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano and Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco.
Duterte, who brokered the deal, made the statement during the joint birthday celebration of Velasco and his wife Wen in San Juan.
“Nasa inyo na 'yan (It's up to you) if the parties would honor," he said.
"I’m not forcing anybody to take a stand. It’s your choice because the agreement and the choice is yours. Cause you can make or unmake the Speaker.”
Under the agreement, Cayetano would serve as House Speaker for 15 months, followed by Velasco for 21 months.
Some lawmakers, however, floated the idea of Cayetano staying on as Speaker following his high trust and approval ratings and the quick approval of the 2020 national budget under his watch.
Velasco said he was confident that Cayetano would honor their agreement, which the latter affirmed.
