MANILA (UPDATE) - Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco on Monday said he will take over the Speakership next year amid talk that House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano might stay in his post past the 15 months he was allotted under their term-sharing agreement.
“Based on the gentleman’s agreement, I will see you next year as the next Speaker of the House," he told reporters.
“An agreement is an agreement. A gentleman’s agreement is a gentleman’s agreement. I really don't want to comment talaga but it’s still so early.”
Some lawmakers floated the idea of Cayetano staying on as Speaker following his high trust and approval ratings and the quick approval of the 2020 national budget under his watch.
“Right now we're just focused on working, especially me as being the (House committee on) energy chairman, focusing on passing laws that I believe na makakatulong po na maipababa 'yung kuryente natin at makatulong sa ating mga kababayan (would help lower our electricity bills and help our countrymen)," he said.
Cayetano said he would honor his agreement with Velasco and urged him to prepare for the job in the meantime.
"Wala namang usapan na hindi masusunod," he said.
(There's no discussion that it will not push through.)
"Kung may pagbabago man, kami ni Cong. Velasco yung unang mag-uusap hindi yung iba di ba. So happy birthday sa kaniya at panatag niya din 'yung loob niya."
(If there are changes, Cong. Velasco and I will talk about it, not the others. So happy birthday to him and rest assured [the agreement will be followed.])
